About tallow, our balm, and how to use it.
Tallow is rendered beef fat - specifically the fat surrounding the kidneys, called suet. It has been used for skincare for centuries. What makes it remarkable is its lipid profile: it closely mirrors the composition of human sebum, the oil our skin naturally produces. This makes it exceptionally biocompatible - your skin recognizes and absorbs it readily, rather than sitting on the surface like synthetic moisturizers.
No. Properly rendered and double-strained tallow has a very faint, neutral scent - far milder than most unscented plant butters. Our balm is made from certified organic grass-fed suet that is slow-rendered at low temperature and carefully strained to remove any proteins that could cause off-odours. The result is a clean, nearly scentless balm. If you choose our lightly scented version, the essential oil is the only thing you'll notice.
Tallow is one of the most skin-compatible fats available, which makes it well-tolerated by most skin types including sensitive skin. Because it contains no synthetic fragrance, no preservatives, and no emulsifiers, it removes many of the most common irritants. For acne-prone skin, tallow is non-comedogenic at the right ratio - it supports the skin barrier without clogging pores. We always recommend patch-testing on a small area first if your skin is reactive.
Our formulations have a shelf life of 12–18 months when stored correctly - no need to refrigerate. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and avoid introducing water into the jar - always use clean, dry hands to scoop. Tallow is naturally high in saturated fat, which makes it far more stable than plant-based oils and resistant to rancidity without synthetic preservatives.
